The swiss "Rivendell" village of Wengen, located in the heart of the Jungfrau region
Characterized by its charming timber houses, scattered holiday chalets, and hotels originating from the belle époque era, this holiday retreat in the Bernese Oberland region preserves the quintessential essence of a picturesque mountain village. Facing southwest, its expansive terrace ensures an abundance of sunshine hours. Accessible since 1893 exclusively by the Wengernalp railway (the world's longest cog railway) from Lauterbrunnen, Wengen has maintained its car-free status, with vehicles remaining parked in Lauterbrunnen.
Wengen serves as a convenient hub for accessing prominent excursion spots within the Jungfrau region. Observation of climbers tackling the formidable Eiger north face, renowned as one of the world's most challenging climbing terrains, is possible through telescopes at Kleine Scheidegg. With a train transfer at Kleine Scheidegg, the Jungfraujoch can also be accessed via railway. Furthermore, from the valley floor resort of Lauterbrunnen, one can ascend to the summit of Schilthorn either through Mürren or Stechelberg.

How to Get There

By rail: Traveling from either Bern or Lucerne, visitors can journey to Interlaken-Ost. Upon arrival, transitioning to the Bernese Oberland Railway facilitates the continuation of the journey to Lauterbrunnen. Subsequently, transferring to the Wengernalp Railway completes the final leg of the trip, allowing travelers to reach the charming village of Wengen.
By car (Wengen is car-free): Travelers have multiple routes to reach Interlaken, whether from Bern or Lucerne, or alternatively from the south via the Grimsel Pass (accessible in summer) or the Simplon Pass, followed by the Lötschberg car-transport train to Interlaken. Upon reaching Interlaken, signage directs travelers towards Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen. Parking facilities are provided at the railway station. From there, taking the Wengernalp Railway enables access to the car-free village of Wengen.

WHERE TO STAY

If you plan to stay in Wengen for a couple of days, you will fin warm hospitality of the village's charming hotels, offering comfortable accommodations with unparalleled views of the surrounding peaks. We personally recommend the Arenas Resort Victoria-Lauberhorn, where we have already stayed once, in 2022, when we paid approximately CHF 150 for a Double Room with 2 single beds (90-130 cm wide), balcony, and mountain view (Jungfrau). This resort offers unparalleled hospitality, very nice accommodations, and impeccable service, ensuring a truly memorable experience. Nestled amidst the captivating alpine scenery, with panoramic views of the majestic peaks, the resort provides the perfect retreat after a day of exploration and adventure.

Männlichen to Wengen: this trail offers a gradual descent, providing a gentle experience while granting a remarkable perspective of the surrounding peaks. Despite the captivating views, the broad pathway ensures safety, minimizing the risk of missteps. Upon reaching Kleine Scheidegg, though it's challenging to part ways with the breathtaking vista of the summit trio of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, the journey towards Wengen beckons. Following the railway track and the Lauberhornpiste, travelers descend effortlessly, relishing the enjoyable downward slope.

Lauberhorn Trail: In the winter months, the Lauberhorn descent witnesses the thrilling spectacle of the fastest skiers hurtling down its slopes, completing the run in a mere two and a half minutes, reaching staggering speeds of 110 km/h on average. However, during the summer season, this iconic alpine ski racing route transforms into a serene landscape, inviting leisurely exploration on foot. It offers ample opportunity to soak in the breathtaking panorama of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, as well as to appreciate the sheer steepness of the slopes and the strategic highlights of the World Cup course.
Traversing from the starting house, passing through the challenging Hundschopf and Brüggli-S sections, and descending to Wengen via the exhilarating Hanneggschuss, one can truly appreciate the intricacies of this daredevil slope. Information boards strategically placed along the route offer insights into the terrain and the challenges faced by the skiers. Only those who have embarked on this journey on foot can truly comprehend the courage required to tackle it on skis.
